Dug Up Coke Bottle May Be Worth $800

A Somerville, Tennessee man was having a gully leveled on his cattle farm when a bulldozer being used turned over a pile of debris.

The man, Doug Wiggington, grabbed a trash bag to pick up the mess and turned up an old, dirty bottle on his first grab.

It had an interesting amber color and unique shape. Further inspection revealed the Coca-Cola emblem.

Wiggington took the bottle home and when it was cleaned up further details emerged. The word "ROOT" stood out.

Initial thoughts were the bottle once contained root beer. However, that turned out not to be the case.

Instead, it was tagged with root to mark that it was produced by Root Glass Works, an old bottling company that has long since been changed in name.

That information along with the the bottle’s color helped date it to the early 1900’s.

A colleague of Wiggington’s performed an eBay search and found an instance of one selling for $799.

Regardless of its value, the history behind this unique coke bottle is intriguing - from being made to how it was buried to being found. That’s worth more than its price!
