Most everyone has heard the saying, "One man’s trash is another man’s treasure." Elizabeth Gibson was walking one morning when she found a piece of treasure in the trash.
That treasure turned out to be the famous painting, ‘Tres Personajes’ (Three People), by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo. The person who placed it in the trash didn’t know that, and neither did Gibson at the time.
She just didn’t believe such a painting should make a trip to the local dump, and took it home. Later, she did a fair share of research and discovered exactly what she saved.
The famous painting was actually stolen back in 1987. Where it’s been since then, no one knows.
Gibson returned the painting, received a reward and will receive a finders fee.
On November 20, the painting could be sold at Sotheby’s in their Latin American Art auction.
The possible selling price? Up to $1M!
