Who would ever think of coming Kansas wheat fields for rocks? And we’re not talking about normal rocks, but those of extraterrestrial origin. Or, more to the point, meteorites that plowed into those wheat fields thousands of years ago.
Two men, Phi Mani and Steve Arnold, did. They met several years back and soon discovered a common interest that turned to meteorite hunting.
Using high-tech equipment that could look deep into the ground, they traversed leased farm fields near Greensburg Kansas after the 2005 harvest.
The search paid off for them. In the end, they found 33 meteorites in the area. Even better, they snatched a massive 1,410 pound meteorite from the ground. They call it Brenham,
Many of the finds went on displays in museums with the Brenham meteorite enjoying a two year tour. But that’s ended.
Now, the Brenham space rock could just turn to gold. It’s being auction October 28 at Bonhams New York, one of the world’s oldest auction houses.
It’s hard to predict the price it’ll fetch. It is rather unique after all. However, a presale estimate approaches $700,000.
