Rome, Italy — Archaeologists in Rome believe they may have found the mythical cave, Lupercale, where a she-wolf nursed the twins, Romulous and Remus.
If you’re familiar with the mythical history of Rome, you’ll remember Romulous and Remus were the twin sons of the war god Mars and the mortal priestess Rhea Silvia.
The brothers were believed to be the co-founders of Rome back in 753 B.C.
The co-founding thing didn’t last. Eventually they were said to have fought. Romulous killed his brother, becoming Rome’s first king.
The cave is decorated with color marble mosaics and seashells and was discovered beneath the ruins of Emperor Augustus’ palace on Palatine hill.
An excellent photo of the cave and background can be seen on the ABC News article, Sanctuary of Rome’s ‘Founder’ Revealed.
